Online registration and hotel reservations for the 2011 Alaska Marine Science Symposium will be available starting in mid October 2011.
The Hotel Captain Cook (dark gold buildings at left) is located 5.5 miles from Anchorage International Airport (see map) in downtown Anchorage. The hotel's 547 guestrooms and suites offer a view of Cook Inlet or the Chugach Mountains. On a clear day one may see Cook Inlet, the Chugach Mountains, and Denali (Mt. McKinley).
Amenities include clothing stores, fine jewelry, gift shops, an art gallery, sundries, an espresso shop, and an Alaska Airlines ticket counter.
Anchorage is a cosmopolitan city with all the amenities you would expect in a city of 300,000 people. Restaurants, museums, and shops are just a few blocks from the Hotel Captain Cook. The Alaska Native Heritage Center is an exciting place where all people can come to expand their understanding of Alaska's first people. The newly remodeled and expanded Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center features permanent and traveling exhibits of art, history, and science.
Even with all the modern conveniences of a large city you can get a taste of the Alaska outdoors right outside your hotel. Stroll, jog, or ski the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail or Chester Creek Trail, each accessible just 3 blocks from the Hotel Captain Cook. The Muncipality of Anchorage grooms these lit, multi-use trails for cross-country skiing in the winter.
The Coastal Trail offers views of the front range of the Chugach Mountains as well as Mount Susitna and Mount McKinley (at 20,320' the highest peak in North America). The Chester Creek Trail passes through neighborhoods and parks as it winds eastward toward the Chugach. (photo courtesy Traviss)
